What is energy healing work?

Energy healing work is a term used for a number of different kinds of complementary and integrative medicine modalities.  They are considered a complement to western medicine and are not an alternative for seeing a licensed healthcare provider.  They can be a powerful adjunct to a person’s overall health plan because these techniques can be learned and used for self-care in a way that reduces stress, tension and more.

The goal in energy healing work is to enhance physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being to aid the body in self-healing. These techniques do that by influencing the bioelectrical-magnetic field and subtle energy system of a human body.

This work is done by either a trained or certified provider who works with a client or an individual who uses a technique for their own self-care whether they be certified or attended a course.

When working with a certified provider, that practitioner works in the energy field of their client to gently allow and encourage the natural balance of the client’s overall energy system, also called a biofield.  In turn, this enhances the body’s natural healing tendency.  The results typically are an enhancement to the mind-body connection and reduction in stress, tension, aches, nervousness and more.  There a fair amount of research that demonstrates this. Check out the scientific evidence for energy healing here.

A certified practitioner doesn’t actually have to touch a person. Generally, their hands are slightly above the surface of the skin or higher depending on the client’s needs.

This makes it excellent for a person who does not like to be touched or can’t be touched perhaps because physical touch may cause further pain, in the case of wounds.  And of course, it’s lovely for people who don’t have an issue with being safely touched.

What is energy healing work?
It's Complementary and Integrative Healthcare

Energy healing work is considered a complementary and integrative health approach to health and healing. Complementary and integrative health techniques and systems are recognized by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in it's division called the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIM).

Generally, energy healing is used as an additional supportive therapy or complement to traditional medical care.  There have been three specific energy healing techniques which have been and continue to be researched: Healing Touch, Reiki and Emotional Freedom Technique. In published studies, all three have been found to be safe and noninvasive approaches.  All three have been found to be calming and stress relieving.  Because of this, it’s generally appropriate for all ages and levels of health. As a self-care technique, it’s an excellent way to manage stress and experience relaxation.

Stress relief

Energy healing therapy is mostly used as a proactive solution for stress. When a person can relax and experience calm, whatever ails them generally benefits from the relaxation too.

The beauty of energy healing work is that it works holistically and naturally to support your whole health by being a complement to your regular health care program and supporting the overall health of your human energy field.

A mini case study:
Support for panic attacks using Healing Touch

by Lucrezia Mangione

A client asked for Healing Touch as a support for feeling panicky. In addition to seeing her counselor she sought out energy healing therapy to help her relax. She wanted to engage in her life with less fear and more trust.  It took more than a few sessions to help her. Below is a highlight of 1 session.

She entered into this particular Healing Touch session with a panic attack coming on.  She was voice guided by a guided imagery exercise and the use of Healing Touch at the same time. Within 10 minutes she was calming down. Within 20 minutes she was relaxing. Within 35 minutes when the exercise was over her panic attack was over, too. She felt present in her body and the panic was a memory.

With the help of her own counselor and Healing Touch, she is learning she can manage to have control over her stress response. Today she is still learning. Her process is ongoing. She is managing her attacks and feeling more engaged in her life.
